Emeli Sandé // My Kind Of Love [Music Video]

A while ago I posted about Emeli Sandé’s brilliant “My Kind Of Love”, which, bar the singles, ended up being the highlight on the brilliant “Our Version Of Events”. Thankfully Virgin Records have also seen sense, and have decided to release the song as the fourth single off the album.

The music video isn’t what I expected from the song at all. As well as seemingly getting a much bigger budget than Emeli’s previous videos, the singer has decided to stay away from the typical love story script and make a clip which focuses on family instead. Laya Lewis aka Liv from Skins, plays Emeli’s cancer stricken sister in the video, and definitely brings her natural acting skills to the set. With a trip to the seaside, the video portrays the preciousness of life and the joy to found in life’s moments.

We see the sisters embrace their inner Holden Caulfield as they relive their childhood, in what is ultimately a very touching music video. Hopefully this video, which embraces the idea of surrounding yourself with good people, will propel this song to once underrated modern classic status alongside “If I Ain’t Got You” and “Ordinary People”.

Rae Morris // Don’t Go

So I finally got round to watching the Skins series finale today, and discovered this beauty of a song which was used in the emotional closing scene.

I didn’t find as much new good music as I usually do on this year’s Skins, but “Don’t Go” is definitely an exception to that trend. Written and performed Rae Morris, the track is sentimental piano ballad, which shows the Blackpool singer-songwriter in her rawest form. With a rich voice of a singer far beyond her years, Rae leaves me feeling pensive and reflective, with the sadness of this song really making me think.

With understated violins against the plain piano backdrop, it’s the quality of the songwriting which makes “Don’t Go” such a good song. It’s beautiful melody and emotional relief, make it something simple, yet special, as a song like this sometimes only comes about by chance. The song was released to Itunes on Monday - so get it, it really is gorgeous.

Kankouran // Rivers

I heard this little beauty from the Skins series 6 trailer, a TV show which always seems to introduce us to great new bands.

The song is a road trip anthem with a scratchy lo-fi sound and an intense feel about it that just makes you want to play it again. Those synths give the track a dreamy feel, contrasting with the ‘come on, let’s have a party and drive about the desert in open top cars’ feel of the rest of it. It’s good, very good. You should definitely check it out.
